Sahibabad: Trans Hindon Residents Drink Substandard Water As Groundwater TDS Reaches 1,700

Over 2.3 million people in the Trans-Hindon area of Sahibabad are forced to drink contaminated water. Despite claims of providing pure water, the TDS in areas with a mix of Ganga water and groundwater was found to be between 500-850, while the TDS of groundwater reached up to 1,700. An incident a year and a half ago at the Saya Gold Society in Indirapuram, where 400 people fell ill due to contaminated water, is a testament to the poor water quality.

A population of more than 2.3 million people in the Trans Hindon area is consuming substandard water despite repeated official assurances of quality improvements. While authorities promise continuous testing and safe drinking water, residents in many sectors feel these commitments have not been met.

Reliance On RO Systems In High-Rise Societies 

In affluent localities such as Indirapuram, Vasundhara, Vaishali, and Kaushambi, residents of high-rise societies have been forced to rely heavily on Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems to safeguard their health. Due to a lack of trust in the municipal supply, many residents now conduct their own independent water quality checks.

Disparity In TDS Levels

Water quality testing reveals significant disparities in Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) levels across different neighborhoods:

Ganga Water vs. Groundwater: Only the pure Ganga water supply currently meets the required safety standards.

Mixed Supply Areas: In areas where Ganga water is mixed with groundwater, TDS levels range significantly higher, between 500 and 850.

Indirapuram: TDS levels were measured between 600 and 800.

Vasundhara: TDS levels typically range from 400 to 600.

Braj Vihar: This area benefits from a pure Ganga water supply, recording a safe TDS level of 131, effectively protecting residents' health.

Groundwater Reality: In stark contrast, raw groundwater in some areas has recorded TDS levels as high as 1,700.

Past Incident

Health Crisis At Saya Gold: The dangers of contaminated water were highlighted approximately a year and a half ago during a severe incident at the Saya Gold society in Indirapuram.

The Outbreak: Contaminated water supply led to a health crisis where 400 residents fell ill, with several requiring hospitalisation.

Response: The Health Department was forced to establish medical camps within the society, conducting continuous health checks for 10 days to manage the outbreak.

Reports suggest that numerous other societies in the region face water quality issues similar to those that caused the Saya Gold crisis, raising concerns about future public health risks.
