The recognition of herbal products by the World Health Organisation presents a golden opportunity for India. With the growing global acceptance of Ayurveda, the Uttar Pradesh government is confident that this traditional system of medicine will gain even more prominence in the coming years. As Ayurveda begins to guide the health practices of not just the state, but the entire country and world, Uttar Pradesh aspires to become a leading hub in this field.
After securing a major position in religious tourism, the state government is now shifting its focus to health tourism. At a recent event, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath stated that following its success in the religious domain, Uttar Pradesh aims to become number one in health tourism as well. He emphasised the need to revive and promote ancient healing practices and traditional home remedies.
The global popularity of Ayurveda and yoga is steadily increasing, opening new avenues for development. The exponential growth of the AYUSH product market—rising more than 15 times in a decade—is clear evidence of its rising global demand. From just USD 2.85 billion in 2014, the global AYUSH market soared to USD 43.4 billion in 2024. Today, herbal products manufactured in India are being exported to over 100 countries.
Uttar Pradesh, known as the land of Dhanvantri, holds a rich legacy in traditional healing. Guru Gorakshanath, who made yoga accessible and practical for all, further strengthens the state’s claim to leadership in this field. Recognising these immense future possibilities, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath aims to make UP a frontrunner in AYUSH.
The state’s first AYUSH University, named after Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath, has been established in Gorakhpur and is already operating an OPD. Additionally, an AYUSH college in Ayodhya and a homeopathic college in Kashi are set to become functional soon. Currently, Uttar Pradesh houses 2,110 Ayurvedic hospitals, 254 Unani hospitals, and 1,585 Homeopathic hospitals, laying a strong foundation for the state's health tourism ambitions.
