Initial investigations indicate that a short circuit was the likely cause of the fire. "There were some cycles that were also damaged. The fire was triggered by a short circuit and we are continuing our investigation," stated Kunwar Bahadur Singh, the Circle Officer of GRP.

According to a NDTV report, most of the burnt vehicles belonged to railway employees. One railway worker recalled parking his bike around midnight. He mentioned that a short circuit had occurred earlier that evening but had been fixed. After hearing about the fire from a passenger, he quickly moved his bike to safety, just before the blaze spread throughout the parking area.

The fire was brought under control after approximately two hours of effort, officials said.
