In a major move to address the worsening traffic situation in UP, the Police Headquarters has initiated the process to deploy 5,000 personnel to the traffic police next month. The personnel will be transferred from the civil police and deployed after completing mandatory training, following directions issued by Director General of Police (DGP) Rajiv Krishna.
The deployment was initially planned for January, but the DGP instructed that posting should take place only after proper training to ensure effective traffic management. The Police Headquarters is also working on a broader plan to deploy nearly 30,000 traffic police personnel across the state to streamline traffic operations.

At present, the traffic police have 11,930 sanctioned posts, of which around 2,800 are vacant. In line with the DGP’s directive, the process for inducting 5,000 additional personnel has now begun.
Before deployment, the personnel are undergoing training based on the ‘4-E model’, which focuses on traffic education, engineering, enforcement, and emergency services.

The training programme also includes the use of modern equipment such as breathalysers for alcohol testing, speed radar guns for speed monitoring, and body-worn cameras. In addition, personnel are being trained in CPR, crowd management, provisions of the amended Motor Vehicles Act, data management, and providing immediate medical assistance to accident victims.
The DGP said that once the training is completed, the personnel will be deployed directly in the field to strengthen traffic enforcement and improve overall traffic management across the state.
