The UP education department is set to provide greater access for children from economically weaker and disadvantaged backgrounds to private schools under the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act. As per the act, 25 per cent of seats in Class 1 and pre-primary classes in all private schools will be reserved for eligible children.

Each district will be assigned a target corresponding to 25 per cent of the total seats in its private schools. Last year, districts including Bahraich, Chitrakoot, Mahoba, Kannauj, and Shravasti received very few applications, resulting in fewer than 600 children gaining admission.

To improve participation this year, the education department has mapped all private schools in every district, increasing the options available on the RTE portal. Officials expect that with timely awareness campaigns and a streamlined application system, more children will benefit and no seats will remain vacant.

The application process will be entirely online and is scheduled to begin in the last week of November or the first week of December.
