The Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department is set to revise its Tourism Policy-2022 after studying policies implemented by other states. Tourism Minister Jaiveer Singh, during a review meeting held at the Tourism Bhawan on Wednesday, directed officials to draft a more detailed and practical version of the policy to boost tourism in the state.
He emphasised the need to fill vacant posts in the Tourism and Culture Departments, as well as the Directorate, at the earliest. Expressing displeasure over the lack of implementation of decisions from the previous review meeting, the minister instructed that regional offices must undergo weekly reviews from the state headquarters.
A key focus of the revised policy will be the promotion of eco-tourism. Singh proposed homestay facilities in Tharu tribal villages and called for a comprehensive eco-tourism plan. He also instructed that villages located on the banks of the Ganga under the Ganga Gram initiative be identified and their details submitted to the department.
To boost religious tourism, especially among international visitors, the minister directed that roadshows be organised in coordination with embassies in Buddhist countries.
As part of efforts to utilise state-owned tourism assets effectively, Singh ordered the identification and removal of illegal encroachments on department land. He also recommended handing over loss-making tourism units to private firms under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
In line with this, concession contracts were signed with M/s Devashrif Hotels and Resort Pvt Ltd to operate the Rahi Tourist Rest House in Barabanki, and with M/s Carpet City Highway Nand Resort Pvt Ltd to manage the Tourist Rest House in Gopiganj, Bhadohi.
During the meeting, Singh also reviewed the progress of various schemes under the Culture Department and took stock of idol procurement and project implementation. He expressed dissatisfaction over the slow pace of cultural initiatives.
Principal Secretary Mukesh Kumar Meshram and other senior officials were present during the review.
