Under National Road Safety Month 2026, the UP Transport Department is conducting a large-scale campaign to effectively control road accidents and raise public awareness of traffic rules. As part of this, action is being taken from January 1 to 31 across the state against those who violate road safety standards.
During the campaign, fines (challans) have been issued, and the public is also being made aware of safe traffic practices through various media. The main objective of the campaign is to reduce road accidents and encourage the public to comply with traffic regulations. Campaign across the state during Road Safety Month.
National Road Safety Month 2026 is being organised across the state. During this time, various road safety awareness programmes are being organised by the Transport Department as well as other related departments. According to Transport Commissioner Kinjal Singh, extensive enforcement action has been taken in various road safety-related campaigns in the state from January 1 to date.
In this period, a total of 49,500 fines were issued for not wearing a helmet, while 11,740 fines were issued for not wearing a seat belt. Action was taken in 15,180 cases of overspeeding, while 4,164 fines were issued for mobile phone use.
Additionally, fines were issued in 304 cases of drink-driving and 5,546 cases of driving on the wrong side of the road. Most helmet fines in the Agra zone, most seat belt fines are in the Kanpur zone. From January 8 to January 14, on the instructions of the Transport Commissioner, a special campaign was conducted alongside the “No Helmet, No Fuel” initiative against the non-use of helmets on two-wheelers, seat belts in four-wheelers, and mobile phone use.
During this period, 34,200 fines were issued across the state for not wearing a helmet, 9,108 for seat belt violations, and 3,033 for mobile phone use. The highest number of helmet fines, 5,411, were issued in the Agra zone, and the highest number of seat belt fines, 1,752, were issued in the Kanpur zone.
Meanwhile, the third week, from January 15 to January 21, was primarily dedicated to action against unfit school vehicles and illegal parking. During this time, a total of 18,379 school vehicles were inspected, of which fines were issued to 351 vehicles for overloading and 570 for non-compliance with standards. The fitness certificates of 75 school vehicles were cancelled for non-compliance with regulations. Taking action against illegal parking, 2,617 fines were issued across the state.
Vehicles removed from roads to be kept in 109 holding areas. In the final phase of the ongoing statewide campaign under National Road Safety Month, from January 22 to January 31, 2026, holding areas have been designated for parking vehicles removed from main roads.
So far, 109 holding areas have been identified in various districts (janpads) of the state. Alongside this, continuous action is being taken against vehicles parked unnecessarily along national and state highways to minimise road accidents.
Awareness programmes are also being organised with the aim of raising awareness about road safety standards. This action by the Transport Department is a significant effort towards promoting safe transport in the state.
