Government agencies are manipulating the quality of drinking water. Not only are consumers failing to receive clean drinking water, but the truth is also being concealed from them. While data is manipulated during sample collection, the general public remains unaware of the sanitation status of drinking water in their area and its potential health effects.

High TDS Levels And Flawed Sampling Methods

In most areas of the district, the drinking water does not meet the required standards. The Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) levels are several times higher than the standard, and water from drains and sewers often enters homes. The relevant departments manipulate the sample collection process. In most places across the district, water samples are taken directly from the tubewell or overhead tank. This is then presented as the definitive water quality. However, contamination occurs due to multiple leaks in the water supply lines. Furthermore, the TDS from private submersible pumps is also reaching levels many times higher than the standard. Contaminated water is flowing from taps, but the general public is unaware of this.

Shalom Organisation To Identify 'Hotspots'

Consequently, the social organisation Shalom has decided to identify drinking water 'hotspots' and make this information public. In response to this issue, Dainik Jagran has conducted a week-long awareness campaign. Inspired by this, the district's social organisation, Shalom, is now preparing to launch a campaign to test drinking water quality. The organisation has previously worked with the health department on a TB eradication campaign and with the administration on a tree plantation drive. Now, it will run a campaign focused on testing water quality and raising awareness. Inspired by the Dainik Jagran campaign, this initiative will be launched across the district.

Public Awareness And Official Reporting

Information about drinking water hotspots in all areas will be displayed in public places. Additionally, residents will be advised on alternative drinking water options. To this end, a campaign will be conducted in every town and village in the district, starting this week. Based on the findings, a weekly list detailing the water quality will also be provided to the DM, CDO, CMO and DPRO.

Statement From The Organisation

President of Shalom organisation Dr Ajit Singh said, "We will identify the areas with contaminated drinking water. We will inform the local residents about our findings. In the affected areas, we will install boards displaying the standards and current status of the drinking water quality. We will also submit a report to the health department, the administration, and the water supply departments. In addition to TDS checks, chemical testing of the drinking water will also be carried out where necessary."
