To curb the increasing traffic and road accidents in the capital, the traffic system is now being handed over to Artificial Intelligence (AI). Under the Smart Traffic Management System, AI-based traffic signals will be installed. The system will soon be launched in the capital on a trial basis. Upon violation of traffic rules, an online fine will be automatically generated and sent to the vehicle owner's registered mobile number.
Slight Negligence Will Prove Costly: List Of Violations
Once the AI system is launched, rule-breakers will be fined immediately. The AI will instantly generate and send a fine to the driver's mobile number for jumping a red light, speeding, driving in the wrong lane, not wearing a helmet or seatbelt, and for obstructing a free left turn. Additionally, those without high-security number plates and those who stop their vehicles beyond the zebra crossing will also be fined immediately.
Massive Increase In Fines Expected
According to police officials, this will lead to a significant increase in the number of fines. Currently, the traffic police issue 10,000 fines per month through cameras; after the AI is launched, this many fines could be issued in a single day. For traffic management, the police currently use Red Light Violation Detection (RLVD) and Speed Violation Detection (SVD) cameras, which issue online fines for jumping red lights and for speeding violations. However, no action is taken for violations of other traffic rules. As a result, drivers openly violate traffic rules. Due to a shortage of personnel, it has not been possible to control such drivers.
How The Smart System Manages Traffic Flow
The new system will use high-resolution cameras, sensors, and AI software. These cameras will analyse the number of vehicles, their speed, and lane discipline at intersections. If the pressure of vehicles is high in a particular direction, the AI will extend the duration of the green signal accordingly. This will also provide relief from unnecessary traffic jams and reduce traffic pressure.

Transparency And Video Evidence
This system will not only reduce the workload on the traffic police but also increase transparency. A key feature of the AI system is that while disputes often arose over fines in many cases previously, the AI system will maintain a video and photo record of every violation, which will reduce the scope for any misunderstanding.

Official Statement
Deputy Superintendent of Police, Traffic Jagdish Chandra said, "In view of the increasing traffic and road accidents, an AI system is being launched in the city soon. The AI will instantly generate a fine for any kind of traffic rule violation and send it to the mobile. For now, it will be launched on a trial basis. After a successful trial, the system will be implemented at all three-way and four-way junctions."
