In the Darbhanga Basti of Lakkhibagh, a community of about 150 laborer families, a young woman named Meena is bringing the light of education to the darkest corners. She motivates children to attend school and personally teaches them, ensuring no child is left behind. Today, 80 children attend her classes daily.

Meena also helps economically weak students who cannot afford to go to school. In a beautiful turn of events, her former students are now teaching others, shaping their futures. On this Teacher's Day , we celebrate the inspiring story of Meena and her incredible journey.

From A Student To A Teacher: A Mission Begins

After completing her own schooling in 2013, Meena connected with Gajendra Ramola, the founder of the Neo Vision Foundation. He sponsored an animation course for her, empowering her with new skills. Her mission began small, teaching just three or four children at her home. But as more and more kids started showing up, she established the "Basti ki Pathshala" (The Community's Classroom) with the foundation's support.

A Beacon Of Hope For 80 Children

For the last 12 years, this small school has been a beacon of hope. Every evening, 60 to 80 children gather for two to three hours of learning. Meena not only teaches them but also counsels out-of-school children and helps enroll them in formal schools. Her curriculum isn't just academic; it includes sports, dance, and singing to ensure all-round development.

Her impact is tangible, she first brought 12 children from rag-picking families into her classroom and later got them admitted into a government school. She has also personally visited the homes of 50 other underprivileged children, convinced their families of the importance of education and ensured their enrollment.

Overcoming The Toughest Challenge: "What Will We Get From Education?"

Meena says her toughest battle was convincing parents, especially those from rag-picking families. They would often ask her, "Rag-picking earns us money. What will we get from education?"

They believed that sending their children to school would mean losing a source of income. Meena had to personally guarantee families that education would promise their children a better future. She also helps them navigate bureaucratic hurdles, like obtaining an Aadhar card (India's national ID), which is essential for school admission, helping them from the first step to final enrollment.

Creating A Cycle Of Change: Students Become Teachers

Inspired by her work, Gajendra Rawat (Ramola) of the Neo Vision Foundation says they encourage more youths like Meena to develop leadership skills.

Today, Meena's hard work is bearing fruit in the most beautiful way: her former students, including Manisha Paswan, Abhishek Raut, Arpita, and Shyama, are now volunteering alongside her, helping to teach the next generation of children from their community.
