In the mountainous state of Uttarakhand, where geographical challenges, narrow roads, and weather uncertainty often hinder development and connectivity, the state government is aggressively expanding its aviation infrastructure. Recognising air and heli-services as a vital lifeline, the Dhami government is set to widen the scope of air connectivity this year to boost tourism and strategic mobility.

Expansion Of Char Dham Heli-Shuttles

Currently, helicopter shuttle services among the four Dhams are operational only for Kedarnath. However, the Civil Aviation Department is preparing to launch similar shuttle services for Badrinath and Yamunotri this year.

Proposed Routes: The department is preparing to issue tenders for services from Gauchar to Badrinath and from Janki Chatti to Yamunotri.

Safety Measures: A Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is being drafted to ensure the safety of shuttle services across all Dhams.

Infrastructure: Efforts are also underway to develop an airport near Fata to support these operations.

Upgrade Of Pithoragarh Airport

The state government is prioritizing the expansion of the Pithoragarh airport, upgrading it to the 3C category.

Capacity: Once the upgrade is complete, the airport will be able to handle landings for 72-seater aircraft, significantly increasing passenger capacity.

Connectivity: Steps are being taken to establish a direct air service between Dehradun and Pithoragarh.

Strategic Importance: As a border district, this upgrade is crucial from a strategic perspective for the armed forces, in addition to facilitating tourism.

New Airstrip In Gunji

The Civil Aviation Department plans to construct a new airstrip in Gunji. Land identification for the project is currently in progress. Given its location, this airstrip will hold immense significance for both the army and tourists visiting the high-altitude border regions.

Seaplane Circuit Development

There is renewed hope for seaplane operations within the state. The department has identified a circuit comprising five key lakes: Tehri, Rishikesh, Nanakmatta, Kalagarh and Haripura.

Feasibility: Studies have found these locations suitable for seaplane operations.

Action Plan: An action plan to operationalise this circuit has been submitted to the Central Government for approval.

Disaster Relief And Accessibility

Heli-services have already proven to be a lifeline for the state. They are currently operational from Pithoragarh to Kedarnath and Chinyalisaur. This year, these services played a critical role in expediting relief work during disasters and transporting affected individuals to safety. Furthermore, they continue to be highly beneficial for elderly and disabled pilgrims visiting Kedarnath.

Ashish Chauhan, CEO of UCADA (Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority), confirmed the expansion plans. He stated, "Steps are being taken this year towards the expansion of heli and air services. Under this, the goal has been set to launch shuttle services for the Char Dham and to land 72-seater aircraft in Pithoragarh."
