At least 18 people, including 11 women and 1 child, fell ill after consuming milk from a cow bitten by a rabid dog in a village in Bangan, Uttarakhand. The patients were treated at the Government Hospital in Tyuni on Thursday and administered the anti-rabies vaccine, officials said.

According to Medical Officer In-charge Dr Narendra Rana, the condition of all patients has improved following vaccination. The incident occurred three days ago when a rabid dog reportedly bit a cow in a village near Arakot, Bangan. The dog, the cow, and its calf died the following day.

Residents, alarmed by the incident, sought medical attention after showing symptoms of illness from drinking the contaminated milk. A health department team led by Dr Rana provided anti-rabies vaccinations and conducted health examinations.

Authorities have warned that other villagers may have also consumed the milk and urged anyone showing symptoms to report to the hospital. Dr Rana stated, “The anti-rabies vaccine is available at the hospital. We have requested the Chief Medical Officer to send additional vaccines and medicines as required.”
