The Transport Department is preparing a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to ensure that vehicles parked haphazardly on the roads are moved to designated parking areas. Recently, during a hearing on a petition filed in this regard, the High Court directed the Secretary of Transport and all District Magistrates to ensure that vehicles are parked in designated parking areas. Following this, the Transport Department has decided to prepare an SOP.

Impact On Traffic And Major Causes

A major cause of traffic jams in the state is the haphazard parking of vehicles on roads. It has been observed that the highest number of vehicles are parked on roads near main markets. It has also become a trend to park vehicles outside many residential colonies and societies at night.

Illegal Parking Trends And Accident Risks

Parking facilities have been constructed in markets, and every residential colony and society also has parking. Despite this, vehicle owners find it more convenient to park on the roads for their own comfort and convenience. This not only causes problems for the general public but also creates a persistent risk of accidents involving these vehicles at night. According to the rules, all vehicles must be parked in designated parking areas. Parking in a no-parking zone is a punishable offence, for which fines are also issued.

Collaborative SOP Creation By RTOs And Police

Additional Transport Commissioner SK Singh stated that all regions have been instructed to prepare an SOP in collaboration with the police. The Transport Headquarters has instructed all Regional Transport Officers to create an SOP for their respective regions in collaboration with the police. After receiving the SOPs from all regions, an integrated SOP will be created and implemented across the entire state. Following this, an integrated SOP will be prepared.
