Andy Burnham, known as the “King of the North”, was elected leader of Britain’s ruling Labour Party on Friday. His victory cleared the way for him to become the country’s seventh prime minister in 10 years on Monday. Burnham has promised to fight the growing influence of the populist Reform UK party and bring a new approach to politics.

Burnham Promises To Fight Rise Of Reform UK

At a special Labour conference, the former Greater Manchester mayor Burnham said he was ready to lead the country and bring hope to people who feel ignored by politics. He said Labour must stay united to challenge Britain’s new right. "We are united and we put the power that comes from that unity at the service of people and places who have been waiting too long for politics to let them hope again," he said, as reported by Reuters. "And that's what were going to do, everybody, were going to give them hope back,” he added.

Burnham Praises Starmer

During his address, Burnham also thanked outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer for rebuilding the Labour Party after its major defeat and leading it to a historic election victory. However, he also said the party must improve and work harder. "This is a proud moment you have given me and my family, and an emotional one," he said. "It is one for which I am ready – ready to lead and to build on the foundation laid by one person more than any other. Under Keir Starmer’s leadership we went from our worst defeat to one of the best victories in history,” he added.
