Dhaka: Weeks after the houses of a Hindu family were set on fire in Dumritala village in the Muslim-dominated nation’s Pirojpur district, a similar case of what appeared to be a targeted attack on the minority community has surfaced in Bangladesh. According to local media reports, Islamists set the home of Birendra Kumar Dey, also known as "Jhunu Sir", a teacher by profession, on fire on Thursday.

The latest incident took place in the Bahor village of Nandirgaon union in Gowainghat upazila of Sylhet district in Bangladesh.

A video of the incident has gone viral on social media platforms, showing family members screaming helplessly as they watched their dream home burn. A young man was also seen rescuing two women while crying out for help.

However, the clip does not clearly show what led to the fire, and authorities have yet to release any official statement on the incident.

Attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh

The incident marks the latest in a spate of violent incidents against minorities in the country, especially the Hindu community members. India has been expressing concerns over attacks on minorities, especially Hindus, in Bangladesh.

On January 3, Khokon Chandra Das (50) died after he was brutally attacked, hacked and set on fire. On December 24, a Hindu man, Amrit Mondal, was lynched over alleged extortion in Rajbari town's Pangsha upazila.

On December 18, Dipu Chandra Das (25) was lynched by a mob and his body set on fire over alleged blasphemy in Mymensingh city.

Unidentified men set the house of Qatari expatriate workers Shukh Shil and Anil Shil on fire in the Raojan area on the outskirts of Chattogram on December 23, but the residents managed to escape unharmed. There has been a spate of violence targeting the minority community in the country in the last few weeks, and mob violence or clandestine attacks have emerged as a major crisis in Bangladesh's changed political landscape, according to political observers.

As of the 2022 census, approximately 13.13 million Hindus reside in Bangladesh, constituting about 7.95 per cent of the total population.
