An anti-ICE protest in Minneapolis on Saturday took an unusual and chaotic turn as demonstrators adopted unconventional tactics to protest US President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown. The protest marked one month since Renee Good, a mother of three, was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent, an incident that has fueled sustained anger and unrest in the Minnesota city.
Hundreds of protesters gathered near the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building, where federal agents were stationed. Videos and photographs circulating online showed demonstrators throwing a range of objects, including bottles, chunks of ice and sex toys, over security fencing and toward law enforcement officers. At several points, protesters waved the objects in the air as crowds chanted slogans against ongoing immigration raids.
Protester Confrontation Caught On Video
The demonstration escalated when a passerby driving a pickup truck through the area was surrounded by protesters. Despite the driver repeatedly shouting that he supported the anti-ICE cause and pointing to signs displayed in the back of his vehicle, some demonstrators were seen striking the truck with sex toys and tearing one of the signs from his hands.
The confrontation eventually eased after other protesters intervened and signalled to the crowd that the driver was “on their side,” allowing the situation to de-escalate.
Police Declare Unlawful Assembly
Police later declared the gathering an unlawful assembly, citing public safety concerns. Law enforcement officers were seen collecting discarded objects from the street as tensions remained high. Authorities said more than 50 people were arrested during the protest, though details of the charges were not immediately released.
The protest, described by some activists as “Operation Dildo Blitz,” reflected a broader pattern of increasingly theatrical demonstrations in Minneapolis over recent weeks. Organisers said the tactics were meant to mock federal authority and draw attention to what they describe as heavy-handed enforcement practices by ICE.
Anti-ICE activist William Kelly, who addressed the crowd before being detained, said the protest was about giving people the freedom to express anger in their own way.
The unrest comes as immigration enforcement remains a flashpoint nationwide. In Minneapolis, the death of Renee Good has become a rallying symbol for activists demanding accountability and an end to aggressive ICE operations. As protests continue, city officials and law enforcement face growing pressure to balance public safety with the right to dissent.
