India's role is under sharp international focus as the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with Iran's most powerful leader is set to begin in New Delhi today. The summit comes at a time when the world is witnessing one of its most volatile geopolitical phases in recent years, with the ongoing Iran conflict threatening energy markets, global trade routes, and diplomatic alignments.

Why is Araghchi's India visit most critical one?

The arrival of Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi in the Indian capital has added major geopolitical weight to the meeting. Tehran is expected to push BRICS nations to adopt a stronger collective position against US-Israeli military actions in West Asia. Iran has openly urged India, which currently chairs BRICS in 2026, to help build consensus within the bloc on the conflict.

However, India faces a diplomatic balancing act. For India, the summit is more than just a diplomatic gathering. India has consistently projected itself as a neutral stabilising force that promotes dialogue over confrontation. The coming two days will reveal whether New Delhi can successfully steer a divided BRICS toward a joint statement on West Asia.

The meeting also carries major economic significance. Rising oil prices triggered by tensions in the Gulf have created concerns for energy-importing countries like India. Stability in shipping routes and the future of the Strait of Hormuz remain crucial issues for several BRICS economies.
