India is set to host the BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs meeting from May 14-15. The meeting taking place at the backdrop of conflict in West Asia, is set to be highly significant with Iran’s participation. At a time when tensions with the United States have not fully resolved, Tehran is looking for strong political and economic partners outside the Western bloc. This is where BRICS, an intergovernmental organisation, comes into play.

Iran FM To Attend BRICS Meeting

In a post on X on Monday, the bloc made it clear that the upcoming meeting is aimed at strengthening dialogue, cooperation, collective action and reinforce partnerships shaping the future of the “Global South.” This meeting is crucial as it will further help decide the agenda for the BRICS Summit later this year (September 2026).Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is expected to visit India during the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.

Why Is This Meeting Significant For Iran?

Iran’s participation would be closely watched as BRICS is expected to serve as a major platform for Tehran amid ongoing tensions. The early year protests, war and sanctions from the United States and its allies, have significantly weakened Iran’s economy. As a result, Tehran wants to expand trade and financial cooperation with countries like India and China.

Multiple reports suggest that Iran hopes to use BRICS initiatives such as BRICS Pay and the New Development Bank as alternatives to the Western-controlled SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication) banking system. This would help Tehran to continue trade and business despite economic restrictions.

As a country, who joined the BRICS group of nations in 2024, the meeting provides Iran a stage to list its challenges, while pledging its cooperation and support in multiple sectors. It can be a bit challenging too as differences between members such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE is clearly visible since the beginning of the conflict. This situation can make it difficult to reach a common position on West Asia issues.

Test For BRICS Group?

Furthermore, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs meeting will also test whether the group can act together during major global crises. Iran’s growing engagement with India shows how global politics is changing and raises the possibility of BRICS becoming more important as an alternative power centre. In the past, countries like Russia and China have strongly voiced for the group to become a stronger force in a multipolar world where Western countries no longer dominate global politics and finance.

Ministers and diplomats from the 11-member BRICS group, including Russia, China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Brazil, and South Africa, are expected to attend to the meeting.
