BRICS Summit 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a "power -packed" schedule at the 18th BRICS Summit at New Delhi's Bharat Mandapam, which concluded on Sunday with the unanimous adoption of the "New Delhi Declaration 2026", marking a significant diplomatic victory for India.
Balancing India's strategic relations with key partners and the West, PM Modi held 15 sit-down bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit, including key talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, in addition to several pull-aside interactions with various world leaders and heads of international institutions.
He also chaired the BRICS Business Forum, where he called for global institutional reforms and stronger Global South ties, while proposing several new initiatives to deepen cooperation among member nations and support developing countries.
BRICS Summit 2026 Day 1: Key Bilaterals With Putin, Pezeshkian, and UN Chief
On September 11, PM Modi conducted a series of high-level bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam.
- PM Modi met with Russian President Vladimir Putin amid the ongoing Ukraine war. The discussions focused on expanding bilateral ties, including strategies to boost annual trade to USD 100 billion by 2030, alongside deepening cooperation in defence, energy, and fertiliser security.
- Hours later, PM Modi met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, their second meeting in two weeks. Reaffirming India's firm stance that tensions in West Asia must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy, PM Modi raised the issue of freedom of navigation and the safety of seafarers in the region. Pezeshkian sought a larger diplomatic role for India amid the conflict.
- UN Secretary-General António Guterres congratulated PM Modi on India's BRICS chairship. Both leaders emphasised the necessity of multipolarity and reiterated the urgent need to reform multilateral institutions, including the UN Security Council.
BRICS Summit 2026 Day 2: Modi-Xi Meet Takes Centre Stage
On September 12, PM Modi declared the BRICS Summit 2026 open, stating that the group was not against anyone, but rather takes everyone along. He urged greater cooperation to support the Global South through difficult economic times, reiterated calls for global governance reform, and stressed maritime security.
- Chinese President Xi Jinping visited India for the first time in seven years amid a thaw in diplomatic relations. During their bilateral meeting, PM Modi affirmed India's readiness for "meaningful dialogue" on matters related to border security and trade. President Xi noted both nations can learn from each other's strengths to play larger roles on the global stage. Both sides reaffirmed that differences should not turn into disputes and called for a long-term strategic perspective.
- PM Modi held separate bilateral meetings with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, UAE Crown Prince Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Vietnam's Le Minh Hung to expand defence, energy, and commercial ties.
BRICS Summit 2026 Concludes
- PM Modi announced the conclusion of the summit after securing full consensus on the New Delhi Declaration 2026 despite tensions between member nations such as Iran and the UAE.
- PM Modi also held meetings with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, and Egypt's Abdel Fattah El-Sisi as other leaders departed from India after attending the summit.
