Exiled Bangladeshi writer and human rights activist Taslima Nasreen has shared a detailed sequence of events surrounding the lynching of Hindu youth Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district, alleging that the victim was falsely accused of blasphemy and killed despite being under police protection.

According to Nasreen, Dipu Chandra Das, a 25-year-old garment factory worker in Bhaluka, was targeted following a personal dispute at his workplace. She claimed that a Muslim coworker, angered over a trivial issue, accused Das of making derogatory remarks about the Prophet in front of a crowd, a charge she said was entirely fabricated.

‘False Accusation Sparked The Mob’: Nasreen

In a post on social media platform X, Nasreen said the accusation was enough to trigger immediate violence. She described how a frenzied mob turned on Das, beating him mercilessly as the allegation spread through the factory area and nearby neighbourhoods. “Dipu was a poor labourer. He had no power, no protection,” Nasreen wrote, adding that mob violence followed almost instantly after the accusation was made.

Nasreen shared a video showing Das speaking to men wearing what appeared to be police uniforms. She said the police eventually intervened and took Das into custody, which, according to her, meant he was officially under state protection at that point. She claimed that Das told the police he was innocent and that the accusation was part of a conspiracy by his coworker. However, Nasreen alleged that the police failed to act against the person who made the initial claim.

Raising serious questions, she asked how Das was later handed back to the mob. “Was he thrown back to the fanatics, or was he dragged out while the police stood by?” Nasreen wrote, suggesting that the sequence of events points to grave lapses or worse.

Brutal Killing And Aftermath

Police and eyewitness accounts state that Das was later beaten, hanged from a tree and his body set on fire. The lynching took place in the Dubalia Para area of Bhaluka, and videos of the attack circulated widely on social media, further fuelling public outrage. Nasreen described the killing as a “celebration of violence,” alleging that extremist ideology has deeply penetrated society and institutions.

Highlighting the human cost, Nasreen said Das was the sole breadwinner for his family, which included his disabled father, mother, wife and child. She questioned who would now support them or ensure justice for a man she said had been killed on a lie.

Bangladesh’s interim government has condemned the incident. The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-14) has arrested seven people in connection with the lynching, and authorities have said investigations are ongoing. The case has once again drawn attention to mob violence linked to blasphemy allegations in Bangladesh and the vulnerability of minority communities during periods of political and social unrest.
