A major assassination attempt on United States President Donald Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner was thwarted on Saturday. The incident has raised fresh concerns over political violence in the country as a manifesto reportedly sent by suspected gunman Cole Tomas Allen before the shooting outlined plans to target Trump and other senior officials.
Why Was Kash Patel Not On Allen's Target List?
However, the document titled “Apology and Explanation” didn’t mention a major name, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Kash Patel, raising speculation about why he was left out. Investigators are reportedly trying to determine why Patel was “spared” in the alleged plan and examine several possible reasons, including his ideology and strategy.
One theory suggests Allen may have excluded Patel due to his anti-Christian views, as Patel is Hindu by religion. A source quoted by The New York Post said, “He was pretty anti-Christian and Kash is Hindu.” On the other hand, some theories suggest that the suspect may have deliberately avoided targetting law enforcement officials, while keeping his focus on Trump only. In the manifesto also, Allen strongly criticised Trump.
“Anything would really just be speculation, but he took the time to go through why he wasn't targeting all of the law-enforcement agencies, so I think it's probably related to that," another source told the news outlet.
What Did The Manifesto Say?
The suspect had reportedly sent an email to his family members and a former employer shortly before launching the attack. In the message, Allen highlighted that he did not expect forgiveness for what he was about to and justified his action. He wrote, “My sincerest apologies for all the trouble I've caused.” He added, “What my representatives do reflects on me. And I am no longer willing to permit… crimes.”
According to investigating officials, Allen clearly intended to target top government officials attending the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. The message said, “Administration officials (not including Kash Patel): they are the targets, prioritised from highest-ranking to lowest.” It added that Secret Service personnel would be targeted only if necessary, and that others, including hotel staff and guests, were not primary targets.
Kash Patel Lauds FBI
Authorities stated that multiple angles are still under review as they try to understand the motive and selection of targets. Meanwhile, addressing a press conference, Patel hailed the way the FBI acted at times of emergency. He said, “America should be proud that this FBI acted with the urgency that was needed for the moment that we had to answer.” The 31-year-old suspect has been charged with attempting to assassinate President Trump. He was presented before a federal courthouse in Washington, DC on Monday.
