US President Donald Trump is unhappy with the latest Iranian proposal on resolving the two-month war, a US official told news agency Reuters. If the situation remains in deadlock, it would dampen hopes for a resolution to the conflict and would inflate the energy supply crisis in the world.
What is the main issue in Iran’s latest proposal?
The Iranian proposal reportedly suggests the restoration of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, while deferring critical concerns regarding its nuclear programme to future discussions. Sources familiar with the situation told CNN that the US President expressed his reservations during a high-level briefing with national security aides on Monday.

One source noted that Trump is "not likely to accept the plan," which was formally delivered to Washington within the last few days. The latest Iran plan is unlikely to satisfy the US, which says nuclear issues must be dealt with from the outset.
Failed peace talks
Hopes of reviving peace efforts have receded since the US president scrapped a visit planned for last weekend by his special envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner to Islamabad, the Pakistani capital, where Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi shuttled in and out twice during the weekend. Araqchi also visited Oman and on Monday went to Russia, where he met President Vladimir Putin and received words of support from a longstanding ally.

If US-Iran fail to reach a peace deal
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said additional pressure could be imposed on Iran if no deal is reached. He equated the Hormoz blockade to a nuclear weapon. "The Strait of Hormuz is basically the equivalent of an economic nuclear weapon that Iran is trying to use against the world. They’re bragging about holding the world’s energy hostage. Imagine if those same people had access to a nuclear weapon," Rubio said in an interview with FOX News on Monday.
What comes next?
1. If the United States and Iran fail to strike a peace deal, the conflict is likely to drag on with dangerous consequences.
2. The main sticking point remains Iran’s nuclear program. While Tehran wants to delay these talks, Washington insists they must be addressed immediately.
3. Without an agreement, the fragile ceasefire could quickly unravel.
4. Renewed US-Israeli strikes on Iranian targets, disruption of oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, and higher global oil prices are highly probable. This would worsen inflation and put further pressure on the Trump administration amid falling approval ratings.
5. Iran may turn to Russia and China for support while activating regional proxies. In short, failure to reach a deal risks a prolonged stalemate, sporadic clashes, and heightened risk of wider regional war.
