Europe's ongoing heatwave has pushed France into a deep crisis, with soaring temperatures triggering a sharp rise in deaths and overwhelming mortuaries across the country. As record-breaking heat continues, several morgues have reportedly run out of space, forcing delays in funeral services.
Over 1,000 Heat-Related Deaths Reported
The country's public health agency said more than 1,000 people died between last Wednesday and Sunday. Officials said the toll is a preliminary figure, and the actual number could be higher.
A sudden surge in deaths amid record temperatures has left many morgues filled. At many places, funerals have to wait till July 10, while the need for additional arrangements to keep the bodies safe is being felt.
Morgues Running Out of Space
Zouhair Herteli, the operator of a mortuary in Orly, near Paris, said his refrigerated mortuary has a capacity of 32 bodies and all the spaces are full.
Last weekend alone, they received more than 150 calls, but couldn't accept any bodies due to lack of space.
Herteli said he has been receiving calls for help from families, nursing homes, the police, and the local administration. With funeral services being delayed, bodies are remaining in storage for longer than usual. He has also sought permission from the administration to use refrigerated trailers to manage the overflow.

Heatwave Expected to Continue
The French weather agency Meteo-France has cautioned that although there has been a minor dip in temperatures in some parts of France, conditions could be set to rise again over the weekend. Heatwave conditions are likely to return to many regions next week.
Health experts said those most vulnerable to heatstroke and similar dangers include the elderly and people with chronic diseases. Authorities have encouraged residents to check in with elderly, disabled and isolated neighbours or relatives, and warned that staying in extreme heat for long could prove fatal.
