Nepal has headed to the polls for its first general election since the massive, Gen Z-led uprising last September that toppled the previous administration. All eyes are on Balendra Shah, better known as Balen, the former Mayor of Kathmandu who recently stepped down to run for a parliamentary seat in Jhapa-5.

While the 35-year-old enjoys massive support among Nepal’s youth, his journey into national politics has been marked by significant friction and headline-grabbing outbursts.

The Social Media Storm

As the 2026 election heat rises, a deleted 2025 Facebook post by Shah has resurfaced, drawing fresh scrutiny. In the late-night tirade, Shah took aim at both the domestic political establishment and global powers. The post read:

"F**k America, F**k India, F**k China, F**k UML, F**k Congress, F**k RSP, F**k RPP, F**k Maobaadi. Go to hell, you guys all combined can do nothing."

The outburst spared no one, targeting major parties including the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, and the Maoist Centre, alongside the world's three most influential nations in Nepali affairs. This wasn't his only radical moment; Shah previously sparked outrage by threatening to set fire to Singha Durbar, the country’s administrative headquarters.

From Rapper To Political Disruptor

Balen Shah’s rise is intertwined with the recent political vacuum. He gained national momentum shortly after former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli was ousted by youth-led protests. Addressing the younger demographic at the time, Shah wrote: "Dear Gen Z, the resignation of your killer has come. Now your generation will have to lead the country."

Education: Balen Shah holds a degree in civil engineering from Nepal and a Master’s in structural engineering from Visvesvaraya Technological University in Karnataka, India.

Musical Roots: Before politics, he was a famous rapper. His tracks, such as the 2019 hit "Balidan" (Sacrifice), which has over 12 million views frequently slammed the corrupt political status quo.

Political Shift: After a three-year stint as Kathmandu’s Mayor, he is now attempting to dismantle the long-standing grip of veteran politicians on a national level.

Why It Matters

Balen Shah represents a shift toward populism fueled by digital influence and youthful frustration. His candidacy in Jhapa-5 is seen as a direct challenge to the "Old Guard" of Nepali politics. However, critics argue that his aggressive rhetoric against foreign allies and domestic institutions could pose a diplomatic challenge if he secures a significant role in the new government.
