A mob lynched a Hindu man in Bangladesh's Mymensingh district on Thursday night (December 18, 2025) amid ongoing nationwide turmoil triggered by the death of key July Uprising figure Sharif Osman Hadi, according to reports from BBC Bangla cited by local media.

The victim, named Dipu Chandra Das-- a young worker at a garment factory who was renting a home in the Dubalia Para area of Bhaluka Upazila-- was accused by residents of uttering insulting comments about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Tied man's body and set on fire

Police reports indicate the assault occurred around 9 pm, after which the attackers reportedly tied his body to a tree and set it on fire. The crowd then moved the body to the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway and set it on fire again, disrupting traffic and spreading panic among local residents.Confirming the incident, Bhaluka Upazila Executive Officer, Md. Firoz Hossain said a person was killed over allegations of insulting the Prophet, adding that the body of the deceased is in police custody.

Authorities later recovered the remains and sent them for autopsy at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. No formal complaint has been lodged yet, as efforts continue to contact the victim's family.

Massive unrest in Bangladesh

The incident unfolded against the backdrop of escalating protests and violence across the country following Hadi's passing in Singapore from earlier gunshot wounds.

In a televised address to the nation late Thursday night, Chief Adviser Yunus announced Hadi's death and promised swift action to catch his killers. "Today, I came before you with very heartbreaking news. Sharif Osman Hadi, the fearless frontline fighter of the July Uprising and spokesperson of the Inqilab Mancha, is no more among us," Yunus said.

He vowed to bring those involved in this brutal murder to justice quickly, saying, “No leniency will be shown" to the killers. “I sincerely call upon all citizens – keep your patience and restraint,” he said. "Let law enforcement agencies and other relevant organisations have the opportunity to carry out investigations with professionalism," he said, adding that the state is fully committed to establishing the rule of law.

Hundreds of students and people gathered at the capital's Shahbagh intersection near Dhaka University campus following the announcement of Hadi's death and chanted slogans like "Who are you, who am I – Hadi, Hadi".

A student group, called Jatiya Chhatra Shakti, brought out a mourning procession on the Dhaka University campus and marched to Shahbagh to join the demonstration.
