Indonesia train accident: At least fourteen people have died and over 80 have been injured after two trains collided just outside Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, on Tuesday. Mohammad Syafii, head of Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS), stated that the evacuation had been completed, adding that it had been a delicate process to rescue trapped passengers from the mangled carriages.

"We needed to involve personnel with certain skills to perform a measured extrication," he said. He noted that all of the victims were women and most of them had been pinned by crushed metal. 

Videos Emerge Online

A disturbing video of the train collision has emerged online, showing the aftermath of a severe accident near Jakarta that left the scene in chaos. The footage shows badly damaged train coaches and emergency responders rushing in to carry out rescue operations.

How Did The Collision Happen?

The accident reportedly occurred when a premier high-speed service, the Argo Bromo Anggrek, slammed into a stationary commuter train. The commuter train was stopped on Track 1 and was heading eastward toward Sikang. Shortly thereafter, a long-distance train approaching from the west entered the same track and collided head-on with the commuter train.

President Prabowo Orders Investigation

According to Reuters report, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has ordered a thorough investigation and announced plans to construct a flyover in Bekasi to alleviate severe traffic congestion and improve safety.

He added that large parts of the train network are not well-maintained. Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee(KNKT) is investigating the crash.
