Iran-Israel-US War: Amid the ongoing war between Iran and the joint forces of Israel and the US, a report has revealed that Russia could have helped Tehran in its military operation on the US bases in the Middle East region. In its report, The Washington Post, citing US officials, stated that Russian intelligence was assisting Tehran in revealing the locations of American military assets. If the report is to be believed, this could be the beginning of Russia's involvement in the war that escalated following the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in US-Israel attacks.
While the extent to which Moscow has been helping Iran is not known yet, the report suggests that it appears to be "a pretty comprehensive effort", reported the Washington Post, citing officials. The experts had raised questions by claiming that Iran's military detection capacities have declined over the years. They further claimed that the precise Iranian attacks on the US military assets could be due to help from its allies.
However, Russia has not issued any clarification on the issue yet; it earlier asked both the fronts to not escalate the military conflicts. While denying the reports suggesting Russia's involvement in the war, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt on Friday asserted that the US was "completely decimating" the Iranian forces.
"It clearly is not making any difference with respect to the military operations in Iran because we are completely decimating them," Leavitt told the reporters. Earlier in January 2025, Russia and Iran signed a strategic partnership agreement to further improve cooperation. As per the reports, both nations agreed to boost the defence partnership in the upcoming years.
On being asked about Russia's possible involvement, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had stated that Moscow was "not really a factor" in the war.
