Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian affirmed on Monday that Iran does not aim to enrich uranium to near-weapons grade levels but had been compelled to do so following the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal with world powers. Speaking at his first news conference, Masoud Pezeshkian stated that Iran's enrichment activities, which have recently reached 60 percent purity, are driven by necessity rather than intent to develop nuclear weapons.
“We have repeatedly stated that our goal is not to develop nuclear weapons,” Pezeshkian declared. “We adhered to the nuclear deal's framework. They tore it apart and forced us into these actions.” His remarks underline a campaign promise to seek relief from international sanctions and revive negotiations to address Iran’s nuclear program. However, the scope of potential negotiations remains uncertain, particularly with a new US administration potentially coming into power next year.
Iran’s current enrichment level is a short technical step from the 90 percent purity required for weapons-grade uranium. While Iran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, Western nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have previously cited concerns about Iran’s military nuclear ambitions .
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei indicated openness to dialogue, suggesting that engagement with the US could be beneficial. Recent indirect negotiations mediated by Oman and Qatar have occurred, though formal discussions have yet to be resumed. Iran’s new foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, was a key figure in the 2015 nuclear deal negotiations, which may influence future diplomatic efforts.
Tensions between Iran and Israel have escalated, particularly following a series of confrontations, including a significant drone and missile attack by Iran on Israel in April and the killing of two Iranian generals in Syria by an alleged Israeli strike. Iran has also threatened retaliation for the suspected Israeli assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in July.

Pezeshkian stressed Iran's commitment to maintaining its ballistic missile arsenal unless regional disarmament occurs, specifically targeting Israel. “We need military power for our security,” he stated, adding that Iran will not forgo its defence capabilities unless all regional actors disarm. He also called for the US to respect Iran's rights, warning against further sanctions or threats.
