Israel’s attack on the South Pars, the world’s largest natural gas reserve on Thursday marked a significant moment in the ongoing conflict that has entered its 19th day. Following Israeli attacks, Iran retaliated by attacking energy sites located in other Gulf countries. Iran targetted a Saudi refinery on the Red Sea, setting ablaze Qatari liquefied natural gas facilities and two Kuwaiti oil refineries.
The targetting of energy facilities, which are typically considered sensitive targets, can intensify the conflict as it disrupts global energy markets, potentially affecting prices, supply chains, and energy security worldwide. United States President Donald Trump, in a post on Truth Social, clarified that he had no prior knowledge of the strike or Israeli actions. However, Iran responded fiercely as the attack threatened the country's electricity supplies, 80 per cent of which is generated from natural gas.
An initial impact was seen on the prices of oil and natural gas that soared on March 19. Qatar, one of the leading exporters of LPG, strongly condemned the Iranian attack targeting Ras Laffan Industrial City, calling it a dangerous escalation.
Energy Facilities Attacked In The Middle East
Ras Laffan, Qatar
Administered by QatarEnergy, Ras Laffan is the world's largest Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) hub. It has been repeatedly targeted in the ongoing conflict. The latest Iranian strike reportedly caused"extensive damage" and fires across key facilities. The state-owned petroleum company had earlier halted LNG production after the facility came under attack.
South Pars, Iran
Israel carried out a strike on Iran’s South Pars, targetting a relatively small section of the vast gas field. Qatar, which shares the same gas field with Iran, confirmed damage to energy-related sites. A massive fire was reported, which was later controlled.
Kharg Island, Iran
The United States launched a major bombing raid on Iran's Kharg Island on March 13, targeting military installation. The island handles about 90 percent of Tehran’s crude exports. While Iran confirmed the attack, it said that it did not affect operations.
Ruwais Refinery, UAE
The Ruwais refinery in the UAE was targeted by a drone attack on March 1. Fire was reported at the facility within the complex following a drone strike. However, its operator Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) did not confirm direct damage.
Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia
The Ras Tanura oil refinery in Saudi Arabia was targeted by a drone attack on March 2. It is one of the largest oil refineries in the region. The fire from the strike caused a partial shutdown; however, operations have now resumed.
Bapco Energies, Bahrain
The Bapco oil refinery in Bahrain was targeted and hit in an attack on March 9, causing a significant fire and disrupting operations. The strike impacted the Sitra Facility.
