Iran War 2026: US President Donald Trump on Tuesday stated that he had agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Iran, adding that Tehran has agreed to open the Strait of Hormuz. While announcing the ceasefire on the Truth Social, the US president asserted that he had accepted a proposal put forward by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his Field Marshal Asim Munir. As per the agreement, while the US will halt the attacks on Iranian soil, Tehran will ensure safe ship movement through the critical chokepoint.

Trump stated that the US will use the two-week window to reach a final agreement with Tehran, adding that he has already achieved all the military objectives. "The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning long-term peace with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East," the US president stated in his post.

The US president asserted that the agreement was "subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz". "We received a 10-point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate," he added.

While accepting the ceasefire, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi stated that safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be possible for the next two weeks if the attacks from the US stopped.

"In response to the brotherly request of PM Sharif in his tweet, and considering the request by the US for negotiations based on its 15-point proposal, as well as announcement by POTUS about acceptance of the general framework of Iran's 10-point proposal as a basis for negotiations, I hereby declare on behalf of Iran's Supreme National Security Council: If attacks against Iran are halted, our Powerful Armed Forces will cease their defensive operations," he stated in a post on X.

"For a period of two weeks, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be possible via coordination with Iran's Armed Forces and with due consideration of technical limitations," Araghchi added.
