The conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran has entered its tenth day, with fresh strikes and drone attacks continuing to escalate tensions. The regional conflict has widened with targeting of critical infrastructure in Gulf countries. Bahrain's key oil facility was hit by an Iranian drone strike on Monday causing thick plumes of smoke to rise into the air.
The attack, which targeted the Bapco Energies refinery located on Sitra island, south of the capital Manama has injured several people and damaged surrounding areas. Several videos have emerged online showing dark smoke billowing from the site. The fire was brought under control and the operations at refinery continued later.
Bahraini Government Confirms The Attack
The Bahraini government confirmed the incident, stating that a fire broke out at the Bapco Energies refinery following a missile attack. The National Communication Centre released a statement, noting “A fire broke out at a unit of the Bapco Energies refinery following an Iranian missile strike.” It added, “The fire has been fully contained.”
Bapco Oil Refinery
Bapco oil refinery is considered a vital element of Bahrain's oil infrastructure and of the oldest refineries of the Gulf. According to the company's official website, Bapco Refining currently owns a 267,000 bpd refinery, along with storage facilities for 14 million barrels and marketing and marine terminals for its portfolio of petroleum products.
Earlier on Sunday, Bahrain stated that an Iranian drone strike damaged a desalination plant that supplies freshwater to residents and injured three people. The Bahraini Interior Ministry, in a post on X, condemned the attack on civilian infrastructure. “Iranian aggression indiscriminately attacked civilian targets and caused material damage to a water desalination plant following a drone attack," the ministry stated.
