In a festive and light-hearted moment in Ireland’s Parliament, Prime Minister Micheál Martin on Friday confirmed that Santa Claus has been granted “official clearance” to travel through Irish airspace on Christmas Eve, ensuring children across the country can look forward to presents arriving on time.

The assurance came during proceedings in the Dáil, where Meath West TeachtaDála (TD) Aisling Dempsey raised the issue in a humorous exchange that has become an annual Christmas tradition in Ireland. Emphasising the excitement among children and families, Dempsey described Santa as the “most important visitor” expected to arrive in the country on December 24.

She told the House that while Ireland had welcomed several high-profile visitors throughout the year, none matched the importance of Santa Claus and his reindeer. Dempsey sought a personal assurance from the Prime Minister that Irish airspace would remain clear for Santa, Rudolph and the entire reindeer team to complete their gift deliveries without delay.

Government Assures Smooth Passage

Responding to the query, Prime Minister Martin said he had already consulted the relevant authorities to ensure Santa’s journey would be obstacle-free. He confirmed that discussions had taken place with Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien and junior minister Seán Canney, following which the necessary clearances were provided. “I want to assure the deputy that Santa has complete clearance in Irish airspace on that critical timeline,” Martin told the Dáil, drawing smiles across the chamber.

He added that the government was fully aware of the tight schedule Santa follows on Christmas Eve and had taken steps to make sure there would be no disruption to his travels.
