Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) on Tuesday claimed to have captured an unmanned United States submarine in the Strait of Hormuz.
The IRGC, in a statement broadcast by state TV, said, "The IRGC naval forces captured one of the most modern, unmanned, and smart submarines of the US terrorist army at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz in a complex intelligence and operational action at dawn today."
The Iranian guards said that it would release the photographs and videos of the captured submarine in the next few hours. The statement added that the submarine was delivered to the US forces last year. "This smart submarine is equipped with the latest technology in the subsurface field in the world, which was delivered to the US terrorist army fleet in 2025,” the statement added.
Washington is yet to react to the development. Iranian media claimed that it was designed for "subsurface reconnaissance and surveillance, seabed mapping, mine detection and inspection of submarine cables and pipelines."
Since the war started with joint strikes by the US and Israel on February 28, the Strait has remained effectively closed. Iran has maintained a blockade of the Strait, which in normal days carried about a fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports.
Washington has imposed its own counter-blockade of Iranian ports to plug its revenue sources. As several attempts at the negotiation table have failed between the two sides, the conflict remains on the brink of a reignition of full-scale war.
The Strait has emerged as a flashpoint in the aftermath of initial fighting since the war started. Iran has annoucned to levy a toll on commercial shipping in Hormuz, a step strongly objected to by the US.
