Nepal Communal Clash: Indian borders have been placed on alert following religious tensions in neighbouring Nepal. The incidents occurred in Birgunj and Janakpur— regions very close to India's Bihar— after a group of protesters launched demonstrations against the vandalism of a mosque in Dhanusha district on Saturday. These regions are close to Bihar's Raxaul district.
According to Nepal Police, the mosque was vandalised by a group of youths in reaction to allegedly anti-Hindu messages circulated on social media by two Muslim youths, who were later taken into custody.
The post, shared on TikTok, contained religiously sensitive remarks and went viral, reportedly showing two youths damaging a mosque. On Monday, the District Administration Office (DAO) of Parsa imposed a curfew in Birgunj city amid continued religious tension over the TikTok video. The order was later extended as the situation remained out of control and the threat persisted.
Shoot-on-sight orders
The local administration has designated Bus Park, Nagwa, Inarwa (East); Sirsia River (West); Gandak Chowk (North); and Shankaracharya Gate (South) as the curfew boundaries."During the curfew, security personnel are authorised to shoot on sight, so it is requested that you do not leave your home except for essential purposes. If you must step out, coordinate with the nearest security personnel or call 100," the administration warned residents.
How did a social media post trigger unrest in Nepal?
The controversy reportedly began when two youths, Haider Ansari and Amanat Ansari, uploaded a video on TikTok in Janakpur, Dhanusha. Locals claimed the video hurt religious sentiments and handed the youths over to the police. However, tensions flared in ward 6 of Kamala Municipality after a mosque was vandalised.
In protest, demonstrators staged rallies in and around Birgunj, burning tyres and chanting slogans from Sunday. The unrest, initially sparked in Dhanusha and Parsa districts, escalated via TikTok as both sides took to the streets over issues affecting religious and communal sentiments.
Notably, the Himalayan country had recently witnessed massive Gen-Z protests last year, resulting in the ouster of the KP Sharma Oli-led government. Those protests, too, erupted on the social media platform TikTok after youths began comparing their lifestyles with those of politicians.
