BRICS Summit 2026: Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will not attend the 18th BRICS summit to be held in New Delhi on September 12 and 13. Bangladesh's State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir claimed that his PM has not been invited personally to the BRICS summit, and the invitation was instead extended to the BIMSTEC Chair.

The Daily Star reported that Kobir has clarified that India did not send a personal invitation to the Bangladesh Prime Minister, but rather, it came in his capacity as Chair of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation. However, he also stated that Bangladesh would send a representative to the summit, but he ruled out Rahman's participation.

"How will we go? Has anyone from the Bangladesh government been invited? Our Prime Minister was not invited. Who told you that our Prime Minister was invited? The BIMSTEC Chairman was invited. Then why are you asking this question?" Kobir asked reporters.

India Invites Bangladesh PM To BRICS Outreach Session In Capacity As BIMSTEC Chair

Earlier, on August 4, India asserted that it extended an invitation to Bangladesh PM Rahman to attend the outreach session of the upcoming BRICS summit in New Delhi in his capacity as current chair of BIMSTEC. The BIMSTEC or Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, is a regional grouping comprising India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal and Bhutan.

India is hosting the annual BRICS summit in New Delhi on September 12 and 13 that is expected to deliberate extensively on several pressing global challenges, including the economic consequences of the West Asia crisis. The summit is being held under the theme of Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability. Several international leaders and high-level delegations are expected to attend the meeting in the national capital.
