A 49-year-old Brazilian was left heartbroken after discovering that the woman he believed could become his life partner was an AI-generated character. The man, identified as Edimar Martins, a bricklayer from Maranhao, Brazil, had sold his belongings and traveled more than 1,200 miles to meet the woman he saw on social media. However, after reaching Belo Horizonte, he discovered that the woman was not real.
How He Fell In Love With Her
Edimar Martins first came across a social media account featuring a woman named Jessica Oliveira, also known as Jessica Fazendeira, in 2020. The account reportedly had more than 3,00,000 followers and showed videos of a blonde woman living a peaceful life on a farm. The woman appeared to live a comfortable rural life and invited men to come and live with her.
She also promised to provide a home and financial support, suggesting that they would no longer need to work to support themselves. As Martins was struggling with loneliness after his mother's death, he found someone who could help him start a new life. After talking with her for some time, he decided to travel to Belo Horizonte to meet her in person.
Travels To Meet Her
On October 9, he sold his belongings to pay for the journey. He then boarded a bus and travelled for more than a day, covering over 1,200 miles. He arrived in Belo Horizonte on October 11, hoping to meet the woman he had come to love online. Carrying her photographs, he searched for her and asked people whether they recognised her. However, he could not find her.
The person behind the social media account later acknowledged that Jessica was an AI-generated character. The creator stated that the character had been created to attract engagement for commercial purposes and denied talking to Martins. After the shocking discovery, Martins approached the municipal authorities for help.
Social workers provided him with food, access to shower facilities and a bus ticket so that he could leave the city and return home. The incident has sparked concerns over growing use of artificial intelligence. There have been a lot of incidents related to AI-related blunders and technology failures. In one widely reported incident, McDonald's tested AI-powered drive-through ordering with IBM, but the system made mistakes, including adding a large number of chicken nuggets to an order.
