Videos of Iranian women running without headscarves at a 10-kilometre road race in Tehran have drawn fresh attention to Iran’s compulsory hijab rules. Several women were seen with their hair uncovered during the women’s race at Velayat Park, with footage from the event widely shared on social media.
Women Run Without Headscarves
The Tehran 10K featured separate races for men and women. The women’s race covered two laps of the 10-kilometre course. Several women took part with their hair uncovered, despite Iran’s legal requirement for women to wear the hijab in public. The videos and images from the race have since circulated widely online.
Videos from the race show women running with their hair uncovered as they take part in the event at Velayat Park. The footage was shared by various social media accounts, including some state-affiliated accounts on X. However, the authenticity of the video is not independently verified.
Iran’s Hijab Rules
The clips have drawn attention as they show women appearing in public without headscarves at an organised sporting event. Notably, compulsory hijab remains part of Iranian law. Government offices and many official establishments generally continue to require women to cover their hair.
At the same time, increasing numbers of Iranian women have appeared in public without headscarves since the 2022 Woman, Life, Freedom protests. The race took place on the same day as the Janfadayan-e Iran rally, a large state-backed gathering held at a different city.
The event also comes four years after the death of Mahsa “Jina” Amini in morality police custody, which sparked nationwide protests under the slogan “Woman, Life, Freedom.” Since then, uncovered hair has become increasingly visible on Iranian streets and in some public spaces, despite the country’s legal requirement for women to cover their hair.
