Saudi-Houthi Conflict: Saudi Arabia on Tuesday issued emergency alerts warning people in several cities, including Jeddah, Mecca and Taif, about a “potential danger.” The Saudi Civil Defence asked residents to stay calm, move to a safe place, and follow official instructions until the danger passes. The alerts come amid rising tensions and recent attacks involving Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi rebels.

Residents Told To Seek Shelter

The warnings were issued by Saudi Arabia’s General Directorate of Civil Defence through the National Early Warning Platform. Authorities advised people to immediately move to the nearest safe place, preferably inside a building or an interior room away from windows. They were also told to stay away from open areas, balconies, rooftops, and windows until the alert had passed.

“A warning has been issued by the National Early Warning Platform in the Jeddah Governorate to alert of a potential danger. Please follow the instructions below,” a post by the General Directorate of Saudi Civil Defence read, along with series of instructions for residents.

People who were outdoors were instructed to enter the nearest building or take shelter behind a strong, solid barrier. Sirens and phone alerts were reported in Mecca, Jeddah and Taif, as well as in other parts of the country, including Yanbu, AlUla, Abha and Jazan. However, the warning in Mecca was notable as it was reportedly the first emergency alert of this type issued there since the latest regional conflict began.

Rising Missile And Drone Threats

The emergency warnings come amid growing tensions involving Saudi Arabia and Yemen, which has escalated since the first week of September. The Houthis have carried out missile and drone attacks targeting Saudi cities and infrastructure, while Saudi forces have responded with strikes against Houthi positions in Yemen.

The latest warning is also significant as the situation has increased security pressures around some of Islam’s most important religious sites. As per reports, the Grand Mosque in Mecca, the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, and Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem are facing heightened security concerns as regional conflicts continue to rise. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has increased its air-defence readiness following reports of ballistic missile and drone attacks launched from Yemen by Iran-backed Houthi forces.
