Thailand Floods: Heavy rains have triggered severe flooding across Bangkok, leaving roads submerged, vehicles stranded and residents trapped in several parts of the Thai capital on Saturday. As water levels rise rapidly, authorities have declared all 50 districts disaster areas, while emergency shelters have been opened for people forced to leave their homes.
Havy Rain Triggers Flooding
According to AP, Bangkok experienced continuous rain from Thursday afternoon through Saturday morning. Officials said rainfall in some major canals exceeded 20 centimetres, causing water levels to rise across several parts of the city, particularly central and eastern Bangkok. Videos that have emerged online show cars struggling through flooded streets and several roads completely covered with water.
Bangkok On Alert
The Thai Meteorological Department has warned that heavy to very heavy rain could continue in Bangkok through Sunday, September 27, raising concerns about further flooding. The flooding has severely affected traffic, with several major roads covered in water. Videos and photos from Bangkok showed submerged streets and cars stranded after drivers were unable to move through the rising floodwaters.
Thousands Affected Across Thailand
The flooding has also affected other parts of Thailand. More than 84,000 people across 21 provinces were reported to have been affected. The central region is among the worst-hit areas. Authorities have sent emergency alerts to people in affected area while several shelters have been opened for residents who had to leave their homes because of the flooding.
Some government facilities are also being used as parking areas for vehicles. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said heavy rain was expected to continue through Saturday but added that floodwaters should begin to recede once the rain stops.
