A newly released photograph from a US intelligence agency has offered a rare glimpse of China's secretive Shenlong space plane, a reusable robotic spacecraft that has drawn international attention after reportedly releasing unidentified objects into Earth's orbit.
The photograph, included in a report by the US Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), provides a detailed view of the spacecraft's structure and activities in space. It shows Shenlong apparently docked with another satellite, with its solar panels deployed and its rear payload bay doors seemingly open.
The image was captured in 2024 by a commercial satellite operated by Maxar Technologies, now known as Vantor, from approximately 90 kilometres away. With a resolution of 4.5 centimetres per pixel, it offers an unusually clear view of the Chinese spacecraft.
What Does The Photograph Reveal?
The newly released image shows Shenlong's distinctive wing design, rear-mounted solar arrays and payload compartment. The spacecraft appears to be connected to another object in orbit, although the identity of the second spacecraft remains unknown.
The open payload bay has attracted particular attention because it could provide clues about the vehicle's operations. However, the photograph does not establish what activity was taking place or what equipment was being carried.
The DIA describes Shenlong as a spacecraft capable of placing objects into orbit, testing them and returning to Earth.
Why Is China's Shenlong Space Plane Under Scrutiny?
China's reusable space plane has been monitored by researchers and space observers because of its repeated deployment of unidentified objects in low Earth orbit.
According to reports, the spacecraft has released and interacted with several objects during its previous missions. At least nine unidentified objects have reportedly been deployed since 2022, although their exact purpose remains unclear.
These activities have raised questions about China's growing capabilities in space, particularly as the United States and China compete to develop advanced space technologies.
Similarities With America's X-37B
Shenlong has often been compared with the US Space Force's Boeing-built X-37B, another reusable robotic space plane designed to conduct missions in orbit.
Both spacecraft are launched into space using rockets and can subsequently return to Earth by landing like conventional aircraft.
The newly released photograph suggests similarities in their overall design, including wing structures and payload compartments. However, the two vehicles are not identical.
The X-37B has conducted multiple classified and experimental missions for the US military, while China has disclosed relatively little information about Shenlong's capabilities and objectives.
Shenlong's Latest Mission
China's secretive spacecraft is currently undertaking its fourth known orbital mission, which began on February 7, this year, following its launch aboard a Long March 2F rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre.
Beijing has not publicly released an official photograph of the spacecraft or provided extensive details about its mission.
The latest US intelligence photograph provides researchers with an important opportunity to examine the vehicle's design. However, the purpose of its interaction with another spacecraft and the nature of its mysterious payloads remain unanswered.
As competition between Washington and Beijing expands beyond Earth, Shenlong's activities are likely to remain a subject of close international scrutiny.
