Islamabad Blast News: The death toll rose to 31 after a massive explosion in a Shi'ite mosque in Pakistan’s national capital, Islamabad, on Friday, news agency PTI reported. According to the report, a suicide bomber detonated himself at an Imambargah mosque during Friday prayers, killing at least 31 people and injuring more than 160.

The toll may rise further, as videos from the scene show victims lying in pools of blood. The explosion occurred at Terlai Imambargah, located in the Shehzad Town area of the federal capital.

Islamabad Capital Territory Police Spokesperson Taqi Jawad said it was too soon to ascertain the nature of the blast, and forensics teams would need to determine whether it was a suicide or a planted bomb.

Police and rescue services have reached the site and started rescue operations. An emergency has been declared at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences and Polyclinic hospitals.

Suicide Bomber Detonated Himself At Entrance Gate

The suicide bomber was stopped at the gate of the Imambargah, but he detonated himself, police and eyewitnesses said. In a post on X, Islamabad Deputy Commissioner Irfan Nawaz Memon said that more than 80 people were injured in the blast, while 15 bodies were shifted to different hospitals.

Who Was Behind The Blast?

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the blast. However, news agency PTI, citing police sources, said that the attacker was a foreign national and had links with Fitna al Khwaraji, a term used for Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

The army troops and Rangers have cordoned off the area, and security operations are underway in and around the site of the blast.

The attack came less than three months after a suicide bomber killed 12 people in a blast outside a district and sessions court building in Islamabad. Today's attack came when Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev was visiting Pakistan. He arrived on a two-day state visit on Thursday.

Condolences Pour In

President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Senate Opposition Leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas condemned the attack. "Targeting innocent civilians is a crime against humanity," Zardari said.

Strongly condemning the attack, Abbas said that targeting places of worship is a direct attack on humanity, religion and social values, which cannot be tolerated under any circumstances.
According to police officials, the nature of the explosion was being probed, but the explosion seems to be a suicide attack.

Today’s incident comes less than three months after a suicide blast outside a district and sessions court building in Islamabad’s G-11 area on November 11, 2025. Twelve people were killed, and more than 30 were injured in the blast.
