Zubair Baloch, the brother of imprisoned gangster Uzair Baloch, was shot and seriously injured in Karachi’s Lyari area on Thursday evening. Two passersby were also injured in the firing and were taken to Civil Hospital Karachi for treatment.

Attack Happened Outside His Home

According to Dawn report, citing Chakiwara police and South Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Syed Asad Raza, the attack took place on Main Chakiwara Road near Zubair’s residence in the Singu Lane area. Police said two armed men on a motorcycle opened fire at Zubair while he was sitting outside his house. The attackers had covered their faces and escaped after a nearby shopkeeper fired back at them.

Zubair Suffered Serious Injuries

Zubair suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his chest and abdomen. He was rushed to the hospital, where he underwent surgery. One of the passersby injured in the firing was also reported to be in critical condition. Police are investigating the case from different angles. According to DIG Raza, officials are looking into whether the attack was caused by personal enmity or possible gang rivalry.

A local social activist, who spoke to Dawn anonymously, claimed that Zubair had recently joined a political party and had started displaying its flags in the area a few months ago. The activist also said there is growing speculation in Lyari that some gang members who had earlier fled to Dubai and Iran during the Karachi operation have returned after the recent US-Iran conflict. This has raised concerns about a possible return of gang violence in the area. Zubair was arrested in seven criminal cases in 2012. He was released from prison in January 2025.

Uzair Baloch’s Legal Cases

Uzair Baloch is the chief of the defunct People’s Amn Committee. His character was played by actor Danish Pandor in the 2026 Bollywood spy thriller Dhurandhar. In March this year, an anti-terrorism court rejected Uzair’s bail requests in seven cases related to murder, possession of explosives, and an alleged attack on police officers.

The cases are linked to a 2012 incident in Karachi’s Kalakot area, where he and his associates were accused of attacking law enforcement personnel with firearms and explosives. Earlier, in April 2020, a military court convicted Uzair Baloch of espionage and sentenced him to 12 years in prison.
