South Korea's constitutional court on Friday ordered the removal of suspended president Yoon Suk Yeol from office for his declaration of martial law in December. While announcing its decision, the court maintained parliament's decision to impeach Yeol from his post. The court stated that the decision was taken considering the future of South Korean democracy.

The court's decision has ensured that the acting president, Han Duck-soo, will continue to serve until the country elects a new president. South Korea's constitution mandates the election of a new president within 60 days of the removal of the previous president. The court rejected most of Yoon's arguments in which he had stated that the martial law was declared to sound the alarm over the main opposition party's abuse of its parliamentary majority.

While reacting to the judgment, acting President Han Duck-soo assured that he would do everything to ensure a peaceful presidential election. Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok is expected to hold an emergency meeting with the Bank of Korea governor and financial regulators.

Acting Chief Justice Moon Hyung-bae stated that the suspended president had misused his powers and violated his duty as president of the country. He further described Yeol's actions as "a serious challenge to democracy".

"(Yoon) committed a grave betrayal of the people's trust, who are the sovereign members of the democratic republic," Moon was quoted as saying by Reuters. He further added that Yoon's announcement had created chaos in all areas of society.

Earlier on Thursday, the authorities deployed 14,000 police officers near the court building as a large group of people had held rallies in support of and against Yeol in the past few days. One of Yeol's supporters got arrested on Friday for smashing a police bus window after the supporters gathered near the suspended president's residence, Reuters reported, citing the Yonhap news agency.
