Bashar al-Assad, Syria's former president, was reportedly obsessed with sex and smartphone games during the last months of his tenure. As per a report by The Atlantic, Assad had intimate relations with the wives of his senior officials and played video games most of the time. The report also suggests that the former Syrian president took absurd administrative decisions and did not put sufficient effort into saving his regime. One of Assad's lovers arranged women for him and later shared crucial information regarding the regime with Russia.
Assad's decision to replace the experienced powerbrokers with younger people, who were not competent, was one of the reasons behind the fall of his regime. Luna al-Shibl, Assad's lover and former Al Jazeera journalist, arranged women for the former president, reported The Atlantic, citing sources. While she was considered close to Assad for several months, their relations soured after Shibl was accused of sharing crucial information with Russia. Earlier in July 2024, she died mysteriously in a car accident on a highway outside Damascus.
However, several people believed that Assad had ordered to kill Shibl, as while her skull was completely damaged, her car barely had any scratches. The report also suggests that the former Syrian president was not aware of the political crisis and was often busy playing games like Candy Crush. Apart from this, a former Hezbollah operative stated that Assad was not interested in tackling the political challenges and was always busy on his phone.
