Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Tarique Rahman, son of former prime minister Khaleda Zia, delivered his first major public address on Sunday, adopting a strong tone against the previous Sheikh Hasina-led government and pledging to restore democracy, stability and inclusiveness in Bangladesh.  Addressing a large gathering of party supporters, Rahman declared, “We liberated Bangladesh in 1971. We liberated it again in 2024,” drawing loud applause. He said the BNP remained committed to democratic values and would honour the sacrifices made by party leaders and workers.

“He gave his life believing in democracy,” Rahman said while paying tribute to Osman Hadi, a BNP leader who was assassinated a few days ago. Rahman said Hadi had dreamed of a democratic Bangladesh and vowed that the party would work to fulfil that vision.

Sharp Attack On Sheikh Hasina’s Rule

Taking a direct jibe at former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, Rahman accused her government of authoritarianism and silencing dissent. He claimed that during the 15 years of Hasina’s rule, fear prevailed across the country and citizens were unable to freely express their opinions.

“For 15 years, no one could raise a voice. Fear gripped the entire nation,” Rahman said, alleging widespread suppression under the previous administration.

Call For Inclusive And Tolerant Bangladesh

Rahman emphasised the need for an all-inclusive and tolerant Bangladesh that ensures participation from people across all communities and ethnicities. He said his party would work to strengthen harmony among Muslims, Buddhists, Christians and Hindus.

He also called for improved coordination and understanding between people living in the mainland and those from the hill regions, stressing national unity as a cornerstone of political stability.

‘I Have a Plan,’ Says Rahman

Invoking American civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., Rahman told supporters that he too had “a plan” to build a better Bangladesh. He asserted that the BNP would work tirelessly to bring peace, discipline and political stability to the country, which he described as essential for democratic revival.

“The BNP will work relentlessly to ensure peace and discipline and to restore strong democratic institutions,” he said. Rahman also spoke emotionally about his mother, former prime minister Khaleda Zia, saying his “heart beats” for her as she remains admitted to Dhaka’s Evercare Hospital. He thanked supporters for their prayers and solidarity during her treatment.
