Thailand Election: The polling for the much-hyped Thailand general election was conducted on Sunday, with reports suggesting no absolute majority for any party. After a fierce campaign from the country's conservative, progressive, and populist camps, Thailand is likely to witness political instability. Amid a border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced the election in December. The Southeast Asian country has witnessed a major political crisis as Charnvirakul announced the election after holding the post for less than 100 days.

As per the reports, the Progressive People's Party is set to emerge as the single largest party; however, it could still not form a government of its own. The party has suggested several structural reforms and changes in the economic structure during its campaign, receiving support from the youth.

"This election is about whether Thailand will get out of its rut, whether Thailand will break out of its political instability and economic doldrums that have persisted," Thitinan Pongsudhirak, a political scientist at Bangkok's Chulalongkorn University, was quoted as saying by Reuters. "My preliminary conclusion, I'm afraid to say, is that it will not break out," he added.

Thailand: Tourism Continues To Struggle

The Southeast Asian country is known for its tourism; however, it witnessed a sharp drop in tourists due to covid. Even after introducing changes like decriminalising cannabis in 2022, Thailand has not been able to boost its tourism sector in five years. However, due to a surge in the illegal activities and crime, the plant is likely to be criminalised once again after the poll results are announced.

The experts stated that the plant was decriminalised to promote the farming of cash crops; its availability on a large scale has raised concerns among the residents, especially the parents of the teenagers. The experts have suggested the political parties to criminalise the crop to maintain law and order.
