A young Hindu garment worker was brutally lynched and set on fire by a mob in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district, triggering widespread outrage and renewed concern over the safety of religious minorities amid ongoing unrest in the country.

Dipu Chandra Das, 25, was attacked on Thursday night in the Bhalukaupazila after allegations of blasphemy spread rapidly within the factory where he worked. Police officials said an angry crowd dragged him out, beat him mercilessly and later tied his body to a tree before setting it ablaze.

According to eyewitness accounts, the violence erupted after rumours circulated that Das had insulted Islam. The situation spiralled out of control within hours, with dozens of people joining the mob. Several bystanders were seen recording the assault on their mobile phones instead of intervening.

Father Learns Of Killing Through Social Media

The victim’s father, Ravilal Das, said the family first came to know about the incident through Facebook posts and local chatter. Speaking to NDTV, he described the moments leading up to the confirmation of his son’s death as “unbearable”.

“We started hearing things on Facebook. Then people began calling. Half an hour later, my brother came and told me they had taken my son and tied him to a tree,” he said, breaking down while recounting the incident. “They poured kerosene on him and set him on fire. His burned body was left outside. It was horrible.” Ravilal Das added that no government official had reached out to the family so far to offer assurances or support.

Police Action And Arrests

Bangladesh authorities said swift action was taken after the incident. The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-14) has arrested seven people in connection with the lynching. Those detained include men aged between 19 and 46, identified as local residents of the area.

Police confirmed that a detailed investigation is underway to determine the exact sequence of events and identify all those involved. Officials have also said that no one would be spared, regardless of affiliation.

Minority Safety Under Scrutiny

The murder follows a heightened state of tension in Bangladesh after the death of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi, which resulted in protests, vandalism, and violence in some parts of the country. There are fears that extremist groups are taking advantage of the situation.

Voices in India and in Bangladesh have denounced the lynching.  Former Bangladeshi ministers have cited that mob violence, religious vigilantism, and community-driven violence have become all too common. Leaders in India, including opposition politicians, have appealed to the Indian government to take up with the Dhaka regime the question of the security of minorities.
