Shaban Mahmood: As the current Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, teeters on the brink amid the Epstein scandal and Scottish Labour leader Anas is likely to call on him to quit, the focus has shifted to a potential successor, Shabana Mahmood, who can also be a history-making successor.

The shift comes after a catastrophic week in the UK, with PM Starmer’s future hanging in the balance over the appointment of Peter Mandelson as the UK's ambassador to Washington. Mandelson has a proven connection with convicted paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein, which has created firestorms in UK politics.

Who Is Shabana Mahmood

A 45-year-old lawyer-politician, Shabana Mahmood, is a key ally of Keir Starmer. Known for her persuasive speaking and an ambitious operator positioned on the right-wing side of the Labour Party.

Shabana was born in Birmingham to Zubaida and Mahmood Ahmed, who have roots in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir's Mirpur town. She joined politics in 2005 by entering the Home Office, managing the crucial job of handling the UK’s border security.

Shabana became one of the first Muslim MPs in the UK in 2010, along with Rushanara Ali and Yasmin Qureshi.

What Is Shabana Mahmood’s Stand On Immigration

Although born to Pakistani-origin parents, as home secretary, she recently put forward controversial plans to curtail the path to permanent residency in the UK, called Settlement or indefinite leave to remain, arguing that it's a "privilege, not a right".

As the BBC reported, she has even been criticised as hypocritical for her dual appeal. On one side, she is seen as having the potential to reach out to pro-Palestine supporters and others who drifted away from the Labour Party for its support to Israel's military actions that global bodies dubbed as genocide; on the other side, she plans to curtail the path for immigrants.
