A 68-year-old woman from the United Kingdom has shared a deeply emotional account of what she describes as a journey beyond life, claiming she was clinically dead for 11 minutes and experienced both heaven and hell before returning to consciousness.
Charlotte Holmes said the episode began during what was supposed to be a routine cardiac check-up. Doctors noticed her blood pressure had suddenly surged to a life-threatening 234/134, prompting immediate hospitalisation. Medical staff warned her that unless her condition stabilised, she could suffer a stroke or heart attack.
Declared Clinically Dead For 11 Minutes
As doctors worked to bring her blood pressure under control, Holmes became critically ill. She later learned that she had been clinically dead for 11 minutes. What she claims to have experienced during that time, she says, will never leave her.
Speaking to The 700 Club, Holmes said her near-death experience began with a vision of what she believed was hell, a place of suffering and anguish. She has rarely spoken about this part, describing it as deeply disturbing and unlike anything she had known before.
‘I Knew I Was In Heaven’
Holmes said that even as her body lay motionless, she could see doctors working frantically to revive her. Then her surroundings began to change. She recalled smelling an intense fragrance, “the most beautiful flowers I’ve ever smelled”, followed by music.
“When I opened my eyes, I knew where I was,” Holmes said. “I knew I was in heaven.” She described the place as calm, peaceful and filled with overwhelming positivity, with no sense of fear. Holmes said she saw deceased family members, including her parents, who appeared healthy, joyful and whole.

Reuniting With Lost Loved Ones
Among those she claimed to see was a child she had lost decades earlier during pregnancy. Holmes said she noticed a toddler and heard what she believed was God telling her the child was her son.
“I lost that child when I was five and a half months pregnant,” she said. “They held the baby up and said, ‘Charlotte, it’s a boy,’ and then he was gone.”
Her husband, Danny Holmes, recalled that while she was unresponsive, Charlotte began describing flowers in the hospital room. “I knew there were no flowers there,” he said, adding that he believed she was experiencing something beyond the physical world.
‘It Was Not My Time’
Holmes said she then heard her father’s voice telling her it was not her time and that she had to go back. Moments later, she regained consciousness in the hospital.
Doctors eventually stabilised her condition. Holmes says the experience permanently changed her outlook on life and death, leaving her convinced that what lies beyond is real, and deeply comforting.
