Marco Rubio India Visit: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio began his 4-day visit to India on Saturday. During the visit, Rubio met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral relations between the United States and India. His trip comes at a time when global alignments are shifting rapidly, and both Washington and New Delhi are working to reset their strategic priorities.

What Did PM Modi And Rubio Discuss?

Following the meeting, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said the discussions were productive and focused on expanding cooperation in key areas such as security, trade, and critical technologies. He added that these sectors are crucial for strengthening both countries and supporting a free and open Indo-Pacific region, stressing that India remains a vital partner for the United States.

Gor wrote on X, “Great to join @SecRubio for a meeting with Prime Minist@narendramodi. We had a productive discussion on ways to deepen U.S.-India cooperation across security, trade, and critical technologies - areas that strengthen both our nations and advance a free and open Indo-Pacific. India is a vital partner to the United States!”

Trump Invites PM Modi To White House

In a separate post, Gor mentioned that Rubio has also extended an invitation on behalf of U.S President Donald Trump, inviting PM Modi to visit the White House soon. He wrote, “News! Secretary Marco Rubio extended an invite on behalf of President Donald Trump, for Prime Minister Modi to visit the White House in the near future!”

 

Why Is Rubio's Visit Significant?

Ahead of his visit, Rubio had highlighted Washington’s strong interest in expanding energy cooperation with India. He said the US is ready to supply “as much energy” as India is willing to purchase, signalling a push to deepen energy ties between the two countries.

Rubio also noted that the US has already begun high-level discussions with Indian officials to boost energy exports, supported by record American oil and gas production. He emphasised that strengthening energy security is a key part of the broader India-US partnership.

His visit, scheduled from May 23 to 26, will include stops in Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi, with major discussions expected on energy, trade, defence cooperation, and critical technologies. The timing of the visit is significant as it coincides with the Quad foreign ministers’ meeting on May 26 in New Delhi.

Quad Meeting

During the visit, Rubio will also attend the Quad foreign ministers’ meeting along with counterparts from India, Australia, and Japan with discussions focused on regional security and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific. Rubio is expected to hold bilateral talks with Indian leaders, including PM Modi and External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar.
